The Sudanese army announced on Saturday that its troops entered and captured Wad Madani city in the strategic Al Jazira State from Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a year after it fell to the paramilitary.

“We are inside Wad Madani city and the Rapid Support Forces fled it,” Major Bassam Abu Satour, a field army commander, said in a statement seen by Turkish Anadolu News Agency.

Khalid Alesir, Information and Culture Minister of the Transitional Sovereign Council also hailed the Sudanese army and affiliated forces for the victory against RSF.

“On behalf of the Sudanese government, I extend the greetings to our steadfast and victorious people in Wad Madani city and in Al Jazirah state,” Alesir said.

In a speech shared on Telegram seen by Al Jazeera news outlet, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the RSF leader widely known as Hemedti, acknowledged defeat but insisted that the battle was not over.

Hemedti attributed the defeat to what he described as the army’s reliance on Iranian drones and fighters from Ethiopia’s Tigray region.

RSF still controls large parts of Al Jazira, except for Wad Madani city, Al-Manaqil, and its surrounding regions, extending south to Sennar State’s border and westward to the White Nile State’s boundary, Anadolu reported.

The conflict between the army under Gen. Al-Burhan and RSF of Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, erupted in April 15, 2023, and has killed tens of thousands, displaced millions and triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

Research from US universities, however, estimates the death toll at around 130,000.

Fighting continues in several parts of Sudan, with both sides accused of war crimes including the deliberate targeting of civilians, indiscriminate shelling of residential areas and blocking humanitarian aid.
