SSPL 2024-2025 kicks off with Malakia Juba vs. Al-Merriekh Bentiu

The highly anticipated South Sudan Premier League 2024-2025 season kicks off today for the first time since independence, with an exciting opening match between Malakia Juba and Al-Merriekh Bentiu at Juba National Stadium.

On the December 24 Kator Juba will face Wajuma Aweil. On December 25 (Christmas Day) Jamus FC will take on Bentiu FC.

The month will conclude with Al-Hilal Wau competing against Nile City Yambio on December 29.

The South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) announced on December 13, 2024, that four new clubs, Jamus FC Juba, Bentiu City FC, Kator FC Juba, and Wajuma FC Aweil, would be included in the league.

These clubs join the 10 teams revealed earlier in August, including Salaam Aweil, Hilal Wau, Holy Family Rumbek, and Lion Hunters FC Yei. This expansion brings the total number of teams to 14.

Speaking at the fixtures release ceremony on December 21, 2024, SSFA Secretary-General Victor Lawrence Lual confirmed that the league’s 14 teams will compete in 182 matches over six months.

Lual urged all teams to complete preparations and adhere strictly to competition rules.

SSFA President Augustino Maduot Parek hailed the league as a crucial step in South Sudan’s football development.

He emphasized its role in fostering a competitive spirit while showcasing the nation’s potential on the regional and continental stage.

Parek also celebrated recent achievements, such as the U-17 team leading the CECAFA U-17 tournament and the AFCON qualifications of the U-20 and U-17 teams last year.

The tournament draws on the 21st of December attracted a host of dignitaries, including the South African Ambassador, representatives from Sudanese and Nigerian embassies, former players, local football officials, and representatives from the 14 participating clubs.

The launch of this league marks a significant milestone for South Sudanese football, promising to inspire talent and unite fans across the country.
