Wildlife authorities say they are investigating several soldiers of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) who were arrested for allegedly transporting nearly a tonne of bushmeat in a military ambulance along the Juba–Bor Road.

Officials said the suspects were intercepted at the Gerikidi checkpoint inside Badingilo National Park after allegedly failing to stop when signalled.

Speaking to Eye Radio, the Director General at the Ministry of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism, General Khamis Adiang Diing, said the suspects are expected to face a military court once investigations are completed.

“We are currently working with the SSPDF to address this matter, and it is still too early to issue a detailed statement. What this incident shows is that we need a new conservation strategy in South Sudan.

“Arresting people with bushmeat is not enough. These animals should be protected in their natural habitats before they are killed. Due to challenges such as limited mobility and resources, we have often focused on intercepting bushmeat after the fact. However, we are now reviewing our approach and will introduce new measures to strengthen wildlife conservation,” he said.

Meanwhile, the wildlife authority says it is reviewing its conservation strategy following recent incidents involving the illegal transport of bushmeat into Juba.

Gen. Khamis said the ministry is working closely with organized forces and local communities to strengthen wildlife protection and reduce poaching across the country.

He emphasized that wildlife remains a national resource that must be preserved for future generations.
