Only SPLM Secretariat has been dissolved – VP

Vice President James Wani Igga, who is the deputy chairman of the SPLM, has clarified that only the general secretariat of the SPLM has been dissolved while the executive is still functional.

After a meeting of the National Liberation Council last week, the party announced that the structures have been dissolved, except the office of the chairman.

The NLC also mandated the chairman, President Salva Kiir, to appoint secretaries to the secretariat.

These raised concerns about the fate of the Arusha Agreement, which seeks to maintain the SPLM leadership as it was before the outbreak of the conflict in 2013.

In a statement, deputy party chairman James Wani Igga says only the general secretariat has been dissolved.

Mr Igga says the executive organ, which is the political bureau, has not been dissolved.

He says the decision does not affect the Arusha Agreement, and calls on the former detainees and the SPLM in Opposition to join the process, which he says is meant to rejuvenate the party.
