SPLM-IO accused of troop buildups near Bentiu

Opposition forces have regrouped in Bentiu and blocked all routes to the town, the minister of Information has said.

Michael Makuei Lueth says it is not clear why the opposition troops have besieged the town.

He says if the opposition forces were only camping in the area, they should have arranged it jointly with other parties to the peace agreement.

“You don’t just go and choose a place and say: ‘I will have my cantonment place here’.” Mr Makuei told reporters last evening after an emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers in Juba.

“This is something organized, and since it is not organized, then we can say their intentions are not known.”

However, the opposition says its forces have not moved out of their bases.

“They have been in their bases for a long time. So the report that they have been converging or moving around Bentiu is not true,” argued James Gatdet, spokesperson of the leader of the SPLM in Opposition, Dr. Riek Machar.

The report of this regrouping came a day after the government and the SPLM in Opposition agreed to form a government of national unity soon.
