A South Sudanese journalist, Matia Samuel Timatio of Yambio FM, has died after drowning in a river in Yambio town, Western Equatoria State.

The Chairperson of the Union of Journalists in Western Equatoria State, Christopher Gaaniko Ginaba, confirmed the incident, saying Matia drowned in the Nakpangau River.

According to Ginaba, the journalist’s body was found floating in the river earlier today.

Matia Samuel Timatio worked with several media houses, including Yambio FM, where he was serving at the time of his death. He previously worked for Anisa FM and City Review, and also served as a correspondent for the Voice of America, covering Western Equatoria State.

Mr. Ginaba described the late journalist as a committed and passionate media professional who dedicated his life to telling the stories of the people of Western Equatoria and South Sudan.

In a condolence message seen by Eye Radio, the Union of Journalists said Matia was known for his integrity, compassion, and strong connection with communities through his reporting.

The Union extended its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, describing his death as a huge loss to the media fraternity in South Sudan.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation by family members and local authorities.

Matia Samuel Timatio is remembered as a dedicated journalist whose work inspired many across the state.
