South African Presidential Envoy in South Sudan for SPLM unity

The South African Deputy President also Special Envoy of President of Jacob to South Sudan, Cyril Ramaphosa is in the country to continue with efforts of uniting the ruling SPLM party.

In May last year, the three main parties to the peace deal agreed in Arusha, Tanzania to reunite and review the contentious issues in their party constitution following the conflict in 2013.

They included SPLM, SPLM-IO and the former political detainees.

The meeting was held under the auspices of the Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapenduzi with support from South Africa’s Africa National Congress Party.

In a statement, the South African Government says the visit of Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa today will consolidate unity within the ranks of the SPLM ruling party with a view of bringing lasting peace and stability in the country.
“Deputy President Ramaphosa working alongside the Secretary-General of Tanzania’s ruling party, Abdulrahman Kinana, have worked tirelessly for the restoration of unity of purpose within the ranks of the SPLM as a precursor to the creation of peace and stability in the country and formation of the unity government in Juba,” partly read the statement posted on the official website of the South African Government.

It says the visit will also establish a basis for the post-conflict reconstruction and development for the benefit of the people of South Sudan.
This is Mr. Ramaphosa’s second visit to the country.
