The Ministry of Interior has arrested a number of soldiers and police officers involved in last night shooting in Juba.

Residents of Juba were terrified by sporadic gunshot which started from 8pm last evening in areas of Tong Piny, Munuki and New site.

Text messages sent by listeners to Eye Radio this morning include residents saying they slept away from their homes when the shooting started.

Central Equatoria Police Commissioner, Maj-Gen Abraham Manyuat told Eye Radio that soldiers under the influence of alcohol were involved in the shooting.

“Those who were shorting were drunk and they were arrested in New Site,” he explained.

“The second shooting was just near UNMISS, because when those people fired shot there, there was also people at this side…they responded by shooting also.

“They were shooting just into the air. Authorities went there and they were identified, and we talked to them because all of them were guards who were shooting for no reason.”

Maj-Gen Manyuat said those who have been arrested will be taken to the military and police courts in Juba to face trial for indiscipline.
