Peace will only be achieved if the government and the SPLM in opposition agree to share power, the head of the Political Parties’ Delegations to South Sudan peace talks has said.

Dr. Lam Akol says the root cause of the conflict is power struggle within the SPLM ruling party.

He says solutions should be provided within the party.

Addressing a debate on the peace process in Juba, Dr. Akol said the executive powers of the president and the prime minister should be shared rationally.

“The logic behind it is that since this conflict was ignited by struggle of power, the solution of it should also involve sharing power in a meaningful way,” Dr Akol suggested.

“The only way where we have two centers of power that can work harmoniously is the president and the prime minister and then you should have powers – executive powers divided between the two of them.”

Dr. Lam said peace cannot be achieved in the country without the support of the International Community.
