S. Sudan to benefit from $60M donor emergency fund-UN

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Valarie Amos, says her office will release sixty million U.S. dollars from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund for South Sudan and the region.

The Fund receives contributions from various donors — mainly governments, but also from private companies, foundations, charities and individuals.

Amos said while the crisis of famine in South Sudan has been averted for the immediate future, the situation in the country remains extremely fragile.

She urged the international community to put the people first.

The UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Herve Ladsous, said that an additional five-thousand peacekeepers were on their way to South Sudan.

However, Ladsous said there are many impediments to the freedom of movement of both peacekeepers and humanitarian workers that are undermining their capacity to do their jobs in South Sudan.
