Police in Lakes State said a 28-year-old man has been admitted to Rumbek State Hospital after cutting off his manhood (penis) in an incident believed to have resulted from a psychological illness on Monday.
The man whose identity has been withheld for confidentiality purpose, chopped off his genital at Akuac residential area of Rumbek town, leaving him in severe bleeding, police spokesperson Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuac said.
Maj Makuac revealed that the survivor had been a little mentally unsound but showed signs of recovery, before he surprisingly engaged in self-harm.
“He has been recovering and to our surprise yesterday, he just decided to cut off his penis which is an attempted suicide,” said the police official.
“He was evacuated to Rumbek State hospital where he is admitted and receiving treatment currently. But, is recovering well. He is okay.”
On his part, the Medical Director of Rumbek State Hospital, Dr. Teran Madit Teran confirmed receiving such incident at the emergency department.
“I rushed to see what happening. He had a very strange kind of trauma in which he cut his penis and there was a serious active bleeding” Teran narrated.
“When I saw it, my concerns was just to stop the bleeding in the first place because he bled a lot, considering the distance and the duration of when this thing happened.”
The medical personnel suggested that the young man had lost a lot of blood.
“So, I worked on him. I rest the bleeding, and than him transfused with one unit of blood because he was almost collapsing because of serious homoerotic secondary to that trauma. I didn’t actually bother to ask the family about that story. But the single story I got from them is that the guy has some mental issues.”
When a reporter approached the bed-ridden survivor to inquire about the reason for his decision to hurt himself, he said it was because he had failed to win a lover for many years in Rumbek.
