The U.S Congress is urging the parties to the conflict to embark on reconciliation process as part of the implementation of the peace agreement.

Chapter five of the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan deals with issues of transitional justice, healing and reconciliation.

A delegation from the U.S Congress paid a visit to South Sudan this week. The four-member delegation was headed by Representative Michael Capuano, Democrat from Massachusetts State.

In an exclusive interview with Eye Radio, Mr. Capuano said he met with President Salva Kiir on the implementation of the peace agreement.

“We need to do everything we can in order to get back on track to bring peace to the people of South Sudan so that we can bring prosperity to the people of South Sudan and that is very much pretty the message we have been taking,” Mr Capuano said.

“But I think we all agree that the first thing that has to be done is to bring peace, there will be no prosperity without peace,” he said.

Mr Capuano said his delegation shared this message of peace with President Salva Kiir during their visit to Juba.

“This has to go forward, if it does not go forward, everyone would suffer including the government,” he said.

“I can only tell you the message we sent very clearly to the President and several others had met with Mr. Riek Machar several weeks ago when he was in Washington. We gave him exact the same message,” he said.

Michael Capuano is the co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Sudan and South Sudan.

Other members of the delegation included: Representative Karen Bass, Democrat from California, Representative Lois Capps, Democrat from California, and Representative Brian Higgins, Republican from New York.
