Residents report calm in Renk County, Upper Nile

Author : | Published: Wednesday, January 1, 2014

The security situation in Renk County, Upper Nile, is reported to be calm despite unrest in parts of the State.

Some local residents say the security situation is stable and that no one has fled to the Republic of Sudan, despite reports that large numbers of South Sudanese crossed the border because of the unrest.

“There are no civilians who have fled the country, people are here and doing their work normally, thank God, there is no insecurity or sound of guns in Renk County,” resident Deng Kak told Eye Radio.

Another resident, Sarah Makeer, said the main challenge is that some telephone networks are not working and many people are waiting for news of family and friends.

Last week’s clashes in Upper Nile State are reported to have left over 100 people dead.

There were reports following the clashes that many people from Renk had fled to Sudan.
