Rape victims arrive in UN Bentiu base

Author : | Published: Monday, November 9, 2015

The UN Refugee agency says it found five cases of rape at the UNMISS camp in Bentiu, Unity State in October.

The agency says it interviewed the people and they said they were raped before arriving at the camp.

The UNHCR says those raped were among almost 4,000 new arrivals, which include 12 children separated from their parents. They were later reunited with their families.

It says the civilians fled Leer, Rubkona, Mayendit, and Koch in fear of insecurity and severe food shortage.

In a statement, the agency says the five rape cases have been referred to relevant partners for medical and psychosocial support.

In October, the Protection Cluster, a group of 60 non-governmental organizations investigating human rights in South Sudan, reported ‘widespread violations’ in parts of Unity State.

Their report indicated that 50 rape cases and 80 deaths were recorded in Leer County in October.
