Eye Radio has received a financial boost from Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Juba to continue supporting its two journalists covering Tumaini Initiative in Nairobi.

The embassy’s support will enhance the station’s coverage of the Tumaini Initiative, a critical process aimed at fostering sustainable peace in the country.

The Netherlands’ timely support comes at a time the media organization is grappling with funding challenges that threaten its operations and its mission to keep South Sudanese citizens informed and educated.

Eye Media’s Chief Executive Officer Stephen Omiri praised the Kingdom’s invaluable contribution, emphasizing that this funding will enable two dedicated journalists to continue providing credible and reliable information regarding ongoing peace negotiations.

“Eye Radio has a longstanding commitment to reporting on peace talks, dating back to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA),” he noted.

In light of the challenges currently facing independent media in South Sudan, Omiri urged other donors to remain committed to supporting access to accurate information and independent journalism.

“In this era dominated by social media, it is critical to ensure funding for independent media, which plays a vital role in delivering credible and accurate reporting,” he stated.

The partnership with the Kingdom of the Netherlands represents a vital step forward in promoting peace and transparency in South Sudan, with Eye Radio poised to continue its essential work in keeping the public informed, he said.

“Tumaini represents hope, and it may be the last hope for many South Sudanese. It is the responsibility of media outlets like Eye Radio to bring the discussions from Nairobi into the homes and hearts of the people,” said Eye Radio’s Program and Station Manager, Koang Pal Chang.

“I am deeply grateful to the Netherlands government for their support, which enables Eye Radio to keep the public informed about the progress of Tumaini.”

The station’s Chief Technician, James Kwaje, also said: “This financial support will help the people of South Sudan to received timely updates on the Tumaini peace talks in Nairobi.”

Mediated by Kenya, the Tumaini Initiative is aimed to resolve South Sudan’s prolonged instability and harmonize fractured political and military actors towards the goal of transitioning the country to democracy and lasting peace.
