A prominent civil society activist has been shot at in Juba Town last night.

The chairman of the Civil Society Alliance, Deng Athuai, was injured after being attacked by gunmen as he left his office at the South Sudan Hotel.

Fellow activist and head of the Political Parties Youth Forum, Agel Ring, said two armed men shot at Deng twice.
He said Mr Deng fired seven bullets at the attackers before they fled.

“That means that if the head of civil society acquired the gun, he was already aware that his life was at risk,” Mr Agel said.

“They managed to fire at him twice and he fired at them. They ran away,” he told Eye Radio.

Mr Agel said that doctors removed the bullet from Mr Deng’s body and is recovering at Juba Teaching Hospital.
He said that two trucks had tried to ramp into Deng’s car last week.

“We think it is the same people who wanted to knock him who are following him,” Mr Agel said.

Mr Deng was kidnapped in 2012 but he was found abandoned at road side days later.

Police are still looking for his attackers.
