The Presidency will meet on Friday to deliberate on the anticipated resumption of Kenya-mediated South Sudan peace talks with opposition groups, Presidential Advisor Tut Gatluak announced.
The high-level discussion was disclosed after a meeting of President Salva Kiir, First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and other senior government officials including several ministers on Thursday.
The Tumaini Initiative aimed at bringing on board political leaders who were left out the 2018 peace deal was set to resume on November 11 and it appeared set for another stalemate after the South Sudan government failed to send a delegation.
However, there have been speculations that the delay in sending the government team is because President Kiir sacked the team leader and has reconstituted the whole delegation by including new members from opposition parties.
According to a statement from Kiir’s office, Gatluak said the expanded meeting of the Presidency is will deliberate on the resumption of Nairobi peace process, following a report from the high-level mediation committee, which he chairs.
It added that the presidential advisor “reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving lasting peace and stability throughout the nation as it embarks on extensive mediation efforts.”
The statement also said the meeting discussed ways to address economic challenges and ensuring the resumption of crude oil export through war-torn Sudan.
According to the State House press, President Kiir instructed the Finance and Petroleum Ministers to coordinate robust efforts to stabilize the economy and improve the citizens’ welfare.
He said the Government was aware of the plights of the population, expressing commitment to salvage the situation.
