Former political detainees agree to return home

President Salva Kiir and SPLM former political detainees have struck an agreement that could pave way to bringing lasting peace to South Sudan.

The deal was struck last evening in the Kenyan Capital, Nairobi during a summit of the Heads of States attended by four East African presidents.

The Press Secretary in the office of the president, Ateny Wek Ateny, says it is in line with the Arusha Agreement that was signed by the SPLM Factions in January.

“The political detainees are going to come back to Juba,” Mr Ateny told Eye Radio. “The timetable will depend on them but they should come as soon as possible.”

Earlier this week, the three SPLM factions signed another roadmap agreement outlining timeframe for implementation of the 21st January Arusha’s agreement on reunification of the party.
