Police report calm New Year celebrations despite fatal incidents

The police have stated that the overall situation during the New Year celebrations was “relatively calm and normal” across the country, despite several fatal incidents reported between December 31, 2024, and January 2, 2025.

In a statement to Eye Radio, Police Spokesperson Colonel John Kassara Koang Nhial reports four fatalities, including three soldiers and one civilian, amid several incidents of violence and unrest across Juba, Abyei, and Warrap.

The police spokesperson says on December 31, 2024, in Abyei Town An SSPDF sergeant was fatally shot in his house by an unidentified gunman.

While in Juba A 45-year-old SSPDF captain was discovered dead behind Jebel Market.

However, Thongpiny Residential Area Colonel Kassara says Four suspected gangsters armed with machetes were arrested for causing chaos and are in police custody pending investigations.

Kassar says on January 1, 2025, Shirkat Residential Area: A 42-year-old SSNPS sergeant accidentally shot and injured himself while intoxicated. He is receiving medical treatment.

He added that at the New Side Residential Area in Juba, an NSS personnel was stabbed to death by a criminal using a knife.

According to the police official, the Joint security forces rescued an individual attacked by machete-wielding criminals. The suspects were apprehended and are awaiting legal procedures.

While in Suk Hajar A boda-boda rider sustained a gunshot wound inflicted by an unknown assailant. The case remains under investigation by the Mauna Police Division.

Kassar says in Gumbo Shirkat A 19-year-old male was assaulted with machetes by a gangster. The victim is hospitalized, and the suspect is in police custody.

Colonel Kassara noted the police arrested eight suspected gang members during the period, with investigations ongoing. At least two individuals sustained injuries, including a suspected gangster shot in the leg and a boda-boda rider who fled after being shot.

The incidents highlight the need for enhanced community policing and security measures to curb violent crime and safeguard civilians.

However, the police Spokesperson encouraged the public to assist law enforcement agencies in reporting suspicious and criminal activities to any nearby police station.

He also called on the public not to get behind the wheel if intoxicated, to ensure they protect themselves and those around them.
