Five Ugandans who were abducted by a group of unidentified gunmen in South Sudan recently have been recovered, the Uganda police have said.

This comes a few days after the police institutions of the two countries agreed to form a joint force to improve security in the country, especially on highways, including the Juba-Nimule, Juba -Yei and Yei Kaya roads.

Pictures and footages showing the five rescued individuals have been broadcast on official media platforms of the government.

The Uganda Police says they were recovered in a joint effort with the Interpol, to which South Sudan is also a party.

The South Sudan Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Daniel Justin confirmed that the five were rescued.

However, he could not specify from which armed group exactly and which parts of the country the individuals were saved.

But he told Eye Radio that the South Sudan Police shared information with its Ugandan counterpart in recovering the people.

“It’s a normal work of Interpol as well as the police. If there is such a case, we usually cooperate; we have good cooperation between us and the Ugandan Police,” Brig Justin said.

About a month ago, Ugandan authorities said some of their nationals went missing, following the series of the attacks on public transport along the Juba-Nimule road.

Besides that, the Ugandan government had also earlier reported that some of its nationals were abducted by an unknown group of armed men along the border with South Sudan in the regions of Adjumani and Moyo.

In the latest development of the rescue of the five Ugandan nationals, no details were given on where they were recovered from, or from which group.
