Police are investigating killing of a community chief in Bor, Jonglei State.

Mr Kuai Ayuen and his wife were shot dead at their house in Jalle village on Wednesday night. County Commissioner Mamer Ruk says three men opened fire into his hut and escaped.

He told Eye Radio that the unidentified gunmen targeted the chief and did not take property.

“The whole community is condemning the incident especially Bor county administration because Chief Kuai Ayuen was well known for his good character,” Mr Ruk said. “He was man of peace and a hardworking chief.”

Mr Mamer says the police are still looking for the suspects.

But a car in which the police personnel were travelling is stuck in the mud on the road to the village.

There is a rise in the number of reported killing of local government officials.

Last week, a man walked into the office of a payam administrator in Yirol East County of Lakes State and shot him dead.

On Sunday, another gunman who has not been identified ambushed and shot dead the payam administrator of Mboro in Wau County, Western Bahr al-Ghazal State.
