Police Captain Richard Ruai admitted before a court in Juba that he physically assaulted a civilian in an incident captured in a viral video that led to his ongoing assault trial.

He told the court that he lost control of his emotions after the civilian allegedly insulted him and damaged the side mirror of his vehicle.

The admission came a day after Ruai’s defense lawyer challenged claims that the assault was intentional. The defense also asked the court to closely examine the video footage that has circulated widely on social media since the incident.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with many citizens closely following developments since the video surfaced online. Prosecutors maintain that Ruai deliberately assaulted the civilian and have presented witnesses to support their case.

During Thursday’s hearing, prosecution witnesses challenged Ruai’s account of events.

They told the court that Ruai continued the assault even as bystanders attempted to intervene and stop the confrontation. Their testimony contradicted his explanation of the incident.

The complainant has not yet appeared before the court and is currently represented by legal counsel.

The Joint Emergency Court will continue hearing the case as both the prosecution and defense present additional evidence and testimony.

The court will determine whether Ruai intentionally committed the assault and whether he bears criminal responsibility for his actions.

The case remains before the court, and judges have not yet delivered a verdict.
