Peacekeeping chief meets President Kiir

The Under-Secretary-General for the United Nations peacekeeping operations, Herve Ladsous, met with President Salva Kiir and other senior Government officials in Juba yesterday.

He was accompanied by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to South Sudan, Hilde Johnson and the Head of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei, General Yohannes Tesfamariam.

President Kiir and Ladsous, discussed UNMISS support to national political processes such as the constitutional review, legal and judicial reforms, and capacity-building of the national police.

Mr. Ladsous discussed with the Government international concerns regarding the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Jonglei, the grave violation of human rights perpetrated by the parties to the conflict.

The UN Diplomat saluted the Government’s efforts to address the situation in Jonglei State, including through the amnesty offered to armed groups.

He also discussed with Government, the situation in Abyei.

Ladsous also underlined that there would be no compromise on security in Abyei area.
