IGAD mediators have indefinitely adjourned the peace talks in Addis Ababa.

After a series of meetings since Tuesday, President Salva Kiir and Dr Riek Machar could not agree on the outstanding issues in the peace process.

These include power sharing, the system of governance and the reintegration of forces during the transitional period.

The spokesman of the government delegation at the talks, Michael Makuei Lueth, says both sides will wait for another invitation from IGAD to resume the talks.

The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution this week to impose individuals and institutional sanctions on South Sudan if the warring parties fail to reach a peace agreement.

‘Peace process must be reinvigorated’

IGAD Chairperson, Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn says ongoing South Sudan peace process must be reinvigorated and reformed to bring about the desired result.

The remark of the Ethiopian Prime Minister, copies of which were distributed to the media, were made after the intensive face-to-face talks between President Salva Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar failed to make a breakthrough on the key outstanding issues.

The Premier said in the coming days, he will consult with the heads of State and government of IGAD, of Africa and beyond to come up with a plan of action on South Sudan.
