Peace Process: AU calls on int’l community to support next phases

The African Union Commission has urged the international community to support South Sudan by mobilizing necessary resources for the next phases of the peace process.

It welcomed the formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity in the country.

President Slava Kiir formed the government on Thursday. 30 minsters and 8 deputy ministers from the former government, the SPLM in opposition and the Former political Detainees have been sworn in.

In statement, the AU Chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma applauded the move as a major step towards tackling challenges facing the country.

She conveyed her profound appreciation to the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission, Festus Gontebanye and the AU representative, former president, Alpha Oumar Konare for their roles.

Dr. Nkosazana also appreciated the efforts of the Intergovernmental Organization on Development, IGAD.

She called upon all AU member countries to support South Sudan in the next steps of the peace process.

Dr. Nkosazana reiterated the full support of the African Union to South Sudan in the process.
