In a significant development for South Sudan, the parties to the 2018 Peace Agreement have drafted a crucial document aimed at addressing the upcoming elections scheduled for December 2024.

This development follows a crucial meeting on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, chaired by Hon. Tut Gatluak Maname, the Presidential Advisor on National Security and Chairperson of the High-Level Standing Committee on the Roadmap and National Transitional Committee (NTC).

Addressing the media on Wednesday, Hon. Tut Gatluak Maname assured that the initial document, which outlines urgent solutions for the elections, will be presented for final discussions in the presidency meeting.

“This document represents a crucial step towards ensuring that the December 2024 elections are conducted smoothly and effectively,” Maname stated. “We are committed to addressing any challenges and ensuring a transparent electoral process.”

Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, and Secretary General for the High-Level Standing Committee on the Roadmap, elaborated on the document’s content.

He revealed that it includes recommendations derived from reports submitted by electoral institutions and security mechanisms concerning the 2024 elections.

“The document encapsulates the collective insights and recommendations from our committee, aimed at resolving critical issues related to the electoral process,” Lomuro explained.

Lomuro also announced that the final results and decisions regarding the document will be communicated to the public within the week, before September 22, 2024.

He urged citizens to stay calm and avoid spreading negative rumours.

“We are working diligently to ensure a fair and orderly electoral process. We encourage everyone to stay informed through official channels and to remain patient as we finalize these important arrangements,” Lomuro added.

The collaborative efforts of the peace agreement parties and key government officials highlight South Sudan’s commitment to addressing electoral challenges and fostering a stable and democratic environment as the country approaches its pivotal elections.
