Parliament urged to pass labor bill

Author : | Published: Monday, October 12, 2015

The Director-General in the Ministry of Labor is appealing to the parliament to pass the Labor Bill into law to enable employment inspection of South Sudanese in the country.

The Labor Bill has been in the National Assembly since 2013.

Clement Philemon said the ministry could not make any decisions on employment to protect rights of the citizens in the absence of the law.

“We need to see that the nationals are employed,” Mr. Philemon told Eye Radio’s Dawn show this morning.

“If the bill had been enacted and we had the law in our hand, we as the ministry of labor at the national level and all the states would have the mandate to inspect and if anybody violated the law by recruiting people illegally, the law would give us the right to evict or deport that person.”

Clement Philemon also said the ministry is trying to avoid the criticism the government received last year when foreign nationals were asked to leave certain jobs to South Sudanese.
