The Transitional National Legislative Assembly approved a concept paper for the formation of a parliamentary task force to oversee the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The TNLA session on Tuesday, January 6, was chaired by the Deputy Speaker in charge of Administration and Finance, Hon. Parmena Awerial Aluong.

Samuel Wahori Loti explained that the Sustainable Development Goals comprise 17 global goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015, aimed at addressing key challenges, including poverty, climate change, inequality, peace, and justice.

He emphasized that South Sudan, as a member state of the United Nations, is committed to achieving these goals by 2030.

He noted that the Transitional Parliament has an oversight role in monitoring the implementation of government policies and actions related to these goals.

The Agriculture and Health Committees are tasked with following up on specific targets linked to the former Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were integrated into the broader efforts to achieve the SDGs.

The deliberations also saw amendments introduced to the structure of the task force’s membership before the final adoption of the concept paper, to ensure effective monitoring of the government’s implementation of sustainable development programs across various sectors.
