Authorities in Pibor Administrative Area have confirmed the death of one person in a road ambush targeting local traders en route to the Ethiopia-South Sudan border trading point at Jebel-Raad.

According to Jacob Werchum, the Minister of Information for the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, the incident occurred between Jebel Boma and Jebel Raad.

Werchum stated that the three traders were on their way to a border trading point between South Sudan and Ethiopia to sell their goods when they were ambushed.

According to the information minister, the incident happened in the same area where the former commissioner of Jebel Boma County was previously killed.

He added that the attackers are suspected to be criminals operating within the Pibor Administrative Area.

“Yesterday [Friday] around 11 am three traders were traveling to Jebel-Raad border point. They were taking their goods there, so before reaching Raad they fell into an ambush and then one person was killed and two others escaped and now they are in Raad,” Wechum stated.

“The place where they were ambushed is the same area where the attackers killed the former Commissioner of  Jabel-Boma county,” he said.

“The same area they are now being attacked, and they suspect people from Pochalla, so the suspects were very many according to the people who escaped the danger.”
