A group of youth in Nyakuron East, a suburb of Juba, is leading a cleanliness initiative aimed at promoting community-driven efforts for a healthier environment.

Edward Abuget emphasizes that such participation not only enhances the living conditions but also sets a vital example for others to engage in local development and upkeep.

Mr Abuget underscores the importance of these initiatives in cultivating a sense of responsibility and unity among residents, ultimately making neighbourhoods cleaner and safer for everyone.

“I want to thank the youth of the neighbourhood for their initiative to clean the area, particularly the cemeteries, which have unfortunately become dumping grounds due to the absence of garbage trucks,” he stated.

To tackle the sanitation issues, Abuget and a group of 12 individuals agreed to collectively contribute 50,000 South Sudanese pounds each, totalling 600,000 South Sudanese pounds.

“We rented a car to transport the garbage from the area, and I urge residents not to throw garbage again, but to collect it until the car arrives,” he added.

The area’s deputy chief, Gisma Alibaba Abdallah, commended the youth for their proactive efforts.

“I appreciate the youth for cleaning the neighbourhood. They gathered funds and took the initiative themselves,” Abdallah remarked.

He also pointed out the pressing need for the government to fence the cemeteries, which have been misused as dumping grounds.

Abdallah encouraged other youth in Nyakuroun to collaborate and extend this cleanliness initiative throughout the neighbourhoods.

“Let’s spread this idea of cleanliness with self-help among the youth,” he urged.

On October 8th, the group of young men and women in Nyakuroun East came together to confront sanitation challenges, raising a total of 600,000 South Sudanese pounds through their community-led initiative.

This project not only addresses health and hygiene concerns but also reflects the residents’ commitment to enhancing their environment.

Many youths, speaking to Eye Radio, echoed the call for collective action to maintain clean neighbourhoods, emphasizing the significance of unity in promoting environmental responsibility.

The group hopes their efforts will inspire others in the community to join in keeping Nyakuroun East clean and safe for all residents.
