MSF calls for increased relief aid to IDPs in Unity

Author : | Published: Wednesday, December 16, 2015

Medicines Sans Frontier has called for immediate increase in humanitarian assistance to the people caught up in violence in Unity state.

The medical charity says the extent of violence against civilians has reached unacceptable limits, saying no one has been spared.

In a statement, the charity says since May this year, its teams on the ground have recorded several reports of abductions, mass rapes, and killings.

MSF says many villages have been burnt to the ground and crops looted or destroyed.

It says the displaced have been forced to flee their homes to live in bushes and swamps, and are now feeding on water lilies and reeds to survive.

The MSF has also criticized the UN Mission in the country for allegedly “Shockingly failing to protect civilians” around the PoC sites in Bentiu.

It says there is still wide “protection gap” outside the camps.

However, the UN Mission ‘rejects MSF allegation of a civilian protection failure in Unity State’.

In a tweet, the mission says their troops have been patrolling the area since last month.

“Its presence facilitates humanitarian aid delivery in the area.”
