A member of national parliament has called for urgent intervention to de-escalate tension in Eastern Equatoria, particularly in Magwi County following recent cattle camp violence that left several dead.
Hon. Deng Dau said the First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly convened a meeting with the Greater Bor Caucus on Monday to discuss the situation.
He said the meeting emphasized on the need for social cohesion and coexistence between communities.
Mr. Dau condemned inflammatory statements on social media, warning that they fuel hostility and division.
“Our message is that we need social cohesion between our communities. What has happened has happened and we say it should not escalate to cover and to continue as a source of insecurity to those that are outside this particular place,” he said.
“We call upon the social media, particularly those who are fabricating and who are talking about more attack, mobilizing, more killing, they should stop this because it doesn’t help us as people of South Sudan.”
“We are one nation and one people. If there’s anything that has happened, it can be addressed using our structures of the government. We have a police, we have a national army, and we have the governors and the commissioners to be able to address this particular situation.”
Dau urged the national government to coordinate with state and local authorities to enhance security and provide humanitarian assistance to affected communities.
He also called for swift action from security agencies and appealed for constructive dialogue to resolve conflicts between pastoralists and farmers.
He further urged youth and diaspora communities to use social media responsibly, advocating for peace rather than escalating tensions.
