A member of the National Assembly from Western Equatoria State has called on the government and aid agencies to deliver humanitarian assistance to the displaced people in Yambio.

Hundreds of families who fled a violence in Maridi and Yambio are seeking protection in the state capital.

Anthony Lino Makana says the IDPs, who fled different conflicts in the state, need medical assistance and shelters as well.

He warned that women and children are at risk of cholera.

“The people are suffering because they are in the open air,” Hon Makana said. There are no tents, there are no cooking utensils because they left in a hurry and they need blankets.”

“We are asking for humanitarian assistances to intervene quickly,” he added.

There have been reported killings in the state over the last three months. Over the weekend, ten people were killed in communal clashes in Yambio town.

Governor Joseph Bakosoro says the fighting was politically motivated.
