The Commissioner of Morobo County, Charles Data, has raised concern over the deteriorating health situation in the county following the withdrawal of humanitarian health partners.

Speaking during a local media briefing, Data said access to healthcare in the county has significantly worsened since international medical organizations pulled out due to insecurity.

“The health situation in Morobo remains alarming because health NGOs withdrew from Morobo,” Data said. “The biggest problem is that whatever drugs we receive in Morobo are only for three facilities, and these are primary health care centers.”

According to the commissioner, the number of operational health facilities has sharply dropped from 16 to only three, placing enormous pressure on the few remaining centers.

Data explained that the bulk of the limited drug supply is often consumed by Morobo Hospital, which has since been downgraded to a primary healthcare center.

“When drugs are going to Morobo, the hospital takes a big share because of the patient load, and the other primary health care centers receive small quantities,” he said.

He added that the limited medical supplies currently allocated to the county only last between two to three weeks due to high demand.

“Instead of 16 facilities, we now have only three, and these cannot serve all the payams,” Data said. “That is why you find the drugs finish within two to three weeks because they are shared with the rest of the payams, yet the supply is meant for only two payams.”

The commissioner further noted that Panyume Payam currently receives no medical supplies at all.

Morobo’s health crisis comes months after humanitarian operations were disrupted by insecurity in parts of Central Equatoria.

On 5 August 2025, the medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières suspended its medical activities in Morobo County and Yei River County following a series of security incidents, including the abduction of an MSF staff member and another incident in which a Ministry of Health worker was taken from an MSF ambulance.

The organization cited growing threats to humanitarian workers as the reason for the suspension.

Although MSF later resumed limited operations in Yei town in November 2025, outreach activities and direct support to facilities in Morobo remain suspended due to ongoing security concerns along key roads linking the two counties.

Commissioner Data is now calling on the government and humanitarian partners to urgently intervene and restore health services in the county to prevent further suffering among residents.
