No money to transport IO forces to Juba

The SPLM in Opposition say they have no money to transport some of their troops from the current bases to Juba as required by the peace agreement.

Some of the forces will be deployed in Juba and in some state capitals in the Upper Nile region, according to the August 2015 deal.

In Juba, the SPLM in Opposition will contribute 1,410 soldiers while the government contributes some 3,400 to a joint force of almost 5,000 personnel.

The rest of the forces will be redeployed 25 kilometers away from Juba under the peace agreement.

But the government says it will move out the rest of its forces after the SPLM in opposition has brought its forces to Juba.

The spokesperson of the leader of the SPLM-IO says they are still lobbying for financial assistance.

“Our leadership has asked the international community to help in transporting the force to Juba. As soon the assistance is availed, then the forces will arrive in juba,” James Gatdet said.

However, he said the government should first withdraw all its forces from Juba.

But the government says its forces need to remain in Juba in the meantime to provide security.

“There is no way these forces can leave Juba to the criminals,” argued Michael Makuei, government spokesperson.
