Two men suspected of producing and circulating fake South Sudanese pounds have been arrested in Yei River County in Central Equatoria State.

Police say the men produced fake notes amounting to more than 150,000 pounds in the last few weeks.

They were arrested in a hotel in Yei town last evening. One man is from the Democratic Republic of Congo and the other is from the Central African Republic.

“We have arrested all these, including the chemicals used for the production of the money,” said Colonel Jeremiah Maker, Police Inspector in the county.

“After all the investigation, we shall send them to the court and the court will be the one to deal with their judgement.”

The government has reported similar cases in the recent past.

In 2012, Jonglei State Directorate of Crimes and Investigation Department arrested six suspects in connection with exchanging forged United State of America Dollars within Bor town.

They were found in possession of $28,100 from the South Sudanese young men who were approximated to be below 18 years.
