Three media organizations have called for investigations into the killings and harassment of journalists in the country.

In a joint statement, the Association for Media Development, South Sudan Union of Journalist and the National Editors Forum, say they were shocked with the news of the killing of Journalist Isaac Vuni.

“According to his family, [he] was kidnapped by uniformed people at gunpoint in June 2016 at his home at Kerepi village along Juba-Nimule road,” partly read the statement.

The three media organizations say another journalist, Oketa Benson, was killed in a traffic accident involving a water tanker.

“Since the beginning of the violent conflict in December 2013, the media fraternity lost 12 journalists, some of whom were targeted because of their work.”

They say some of the journalists killed were targeted for their work.

According to the groups, journalists have continued to face constant harassment in the country.

The three organizations expressed concern about what they describe as an alarming level of impunity for crimes against journalists. They have appealed to the government to bring the killers to justice and end harassment.

Government officials are yet to comment.
