A massive fire engulfed a section of Konyo-konyo Market in Juba on Thursday – destroying large columns of shops at the sprawling business center as firefighters delayed their response, according to eye witnesses.
People who spoke to Eye Radio from the scene narrated chaotic scenes in a makeshift part of the market where traders were scrambling to save a few belongings.
A video footage obtained by Eye Radio shows helpless people carrying buckets of water and ineffectively spraying the large flames suspected to have been caused by electric wires.
A group of police officers reportedly arrived at the scene but only to guard against elements that might use the chaos to loot the market.
“Now in Konyo-konyo market, there is a big fire outbreak. It had started as electric wires in one shop escalating to the others for more than thirty minutes now that’s side of the middle shops the old taxi park,” an eyewitness said.
“It’s still so big. No firefighters came around yet. It is only the police to guard us but there is nothing, people in the market are just running on different sides.”
“The Mayor also pass around the location but still the fire is extending and people are running in different direction with no help from the fire department.”
Konyo-konyo is South Sudan’s biggest market. The cause of the fire remains to be officially established and authorities have yet to issue a statement.
