Traders in Bor town, Jonglei State say prices of consumable goods have almost tripled in the market.

They say the rise is due to shortage of US dollars.

The Traders said one dollar is now exchanged at 7.4 South Sudanese Pounds in the parallel market, also known as black market.

Ali Hammed is a wholesaler in Bor market.

“These days the prices of goods are high because if the dollar is going up, everything will be high. The problem is dollar, you cannot get dollar, and if you get, it’s always at a high price which will affects everything.” He said.

He says 50kg of sugar used to cost 95 South Sudanese pounds, but now it costs 320 South Sudanese Pounds.

Deng Akuei is the Chief Executive Officer of Bor Municipal Council.

He said: “Prices changes are always a government policy, which cannot be done at the lower level like here in municipality council.”

He urged both the customers and traders to be patient until the situation improves.
