Police in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have arrested a man accused of possessing counterfeit US dollar notes in Aweil Market.

Police spokesperson Colonel Madut Ngong Aleu said the Criminal Investigation Department arrested the suspect, identified as Akol Mou Wol, on July 14 following reports of fake currency circulating in the market.

He said the suspect was found with 300 counterfeit 50-dollar bills, which investigators confirmed after identifying repeated serial numbers on the notes.

“After testing, investigators were able to confirm the counterfeit nature of the bills by observing similarities and repetitions in the serial numbers,” Col. Aleu said.

The police spokesperson said the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue to establish the source of the counterfeit money and any equipment used in its production.

He added that the suspect will be taken to court after completion of the investigation and commended the Criminal Investigation Department for its efforts in combating crime in Aweil.
