The Minister of Information, Communication, Technology, and Postal Services has warned against the abuse of social media in the country.

Michael Makuei expressed concern over some individuals who are exploiting the internet and social media platforms for malicious purposes in South Sudan.

According to Makuei, several individuals are engaging in misleading activities across social media platforms.

He stated that there is a need for responsible use of social media, advising citizens to utilize it for their own benefit.

Michael Makuei made the remarks during a penal discussion at the ongoing National Economic Conference in Juba.

“There are a lot of people who are actually abusing the internet. The internet was originally created for business, it was not created for all these noses which are flying all over in social media this is the real abuse of social media,” said Makuei.

“I am advising people not to abuse social media, but to use it the correct way because if we go to the manufacturer of the internet today and find that we are abusing it that much he will really regret having produced it, so let us respect the social media, let us respect the internet,” he said.

Minister Makuei went on to reveal that the government is working on introducing punitive measures to address the issue of internet abuse.

“All those who are abusing the internet here in South Sudan, we will get hold of them and we will take you to the court by the way,” said Makuei.

“Respect yourself, respect the internet and social media so that you don’t fall into crisis, otherwise we will be on your neck soon.”
