The UN Mission in South Sudan has urged civilians that have sought protection at its base in Malakal to maintain peace after clashes in the town.

The Mission’s State Coordinator, Deborah Schein says more civilians are arriving at the camp after the violence broke out.

Fighting broke out in the area on Tuesday and resumed in Malakal town yesterday afternoon between forces of General Johnson Olony and those loyal to Governor Simon Kun Puoch.

UNMISS says that five injured members of the staff of State Governor Simon Kun Puoch are receiving medical treatment at the Mission’s hospital.

It says at least 1,500 unarmed civilians have joined the existing IDP population of over 26,000 in the UN Malakal base.
