Authorities in Mundri East County, Western Equatoria State, have reported that Lui Hospital has run out of essential medications, and medical staff have gone without incentives for five months.
The Commissioner of Mundri East County, Margret Fozia disclosed this in an exclusive phone interview with Eye Radio on Thursday, December 12.
She explained that Lui Hospital serves not only several counties in the state but also neighbouring counties in the Lakes and Central Equatoria states.
She described the shortage of crucial medications and the lack of incentives for medical staff as a critical challenge to the healthcare system.
Fozia emphasized that these issues severely hinder the hospital’s ability to provide adequate medical services and affect staff morale, further straining an already fragile system.
She also highlighted that the five-month delay in incentives underscores the financial difficulties faced by healthcare workers.
“The partner, who is the manager of the fund should ensure that incentives are paid in time especially drugs, if the incentives are not paying time, at least let the drugs be in the hospital,” Fozia stated.
“It’s not fair that a big hospital like Lui doesn’t operate while there are still patients being brought from Wulu, Yambio, Tambura, Rokon, Terekeka, Tali, and Lainya everywhere they bring to Lui Hospital, Mundri West, and Mvolo,” she said.
“Lui Hospital is one of the big hospitals in South Sudan and it serves many people not only the people of Mundri or Greater Mundri, but it serves the people of South Sudan,” she stated.
“It will be moved to bring the medicine in time. Now the first quarter has finished and there’s no medicine. He is very challenging,” he said.
In July of this year, the Support for Peace Education and Development Programme-SPEDP replaced CUAMM in Lui Hospital.
CUAMM service delivery in Greater Mundri ended on 30th June 2024.
