National Democratic Movement (NDM) leader Lam Akol returned to Juba on Thursday after spending several months in Jordan receiving medical treatment.

Akol arrived at Juba International Airport on Thursday morning and was welcomed by senior party officials and supporters before proceeding to the NDM headquarters.

His return follows a period of treatment in the Jordanian capital, Amman, where Sudan’s Ambassador to Jordan, Hassan Saleh Suwar Al-Dahab, visited him at the hospital.

According to a statement from the Sudanese Embassy in Amman, the ambassador was accompanied by members of the Sudanese diplomatic mission during the visit to assess Akol’s health and recovery.

Speaking to journalists at the NDM headquarters, Akol said he had recovered and was ready to resume his political duties as South Sudan prepares for elections scheduled for December.

“I’m now fully back and given a new lease of wellness, so I’m ready to resume my role together with my colleagues in order to advance the objectives of the NDM,” he said.

Akol thanked party members for their support during his absence and pledged to work closely with colleagues to advance the party’s objectives.

He said South Sudan faces several challenges that require collective efforts, including the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

The veteran politician’s return comes amid heightened political activity as parties prepare for the anticipated electoral process and the continued implementation of the peace agreement.
