The Information Minister of Lakes state says four police officers were killed in Yirol East County on Friday.

Dut Makoi says the soldiers were killed in an attack on Pabuot area by suspected forces loyal to Dr. Riek Machar

Mr. Makoi told Eye Radio that seven people were also wounded in the attack.

“We lost four policemen, including a driver, and seven other people were wounded. This is what happened on 31January. Our intention is not actually to fight them because we are observing the ceasefire that has just been signed between the rebels and the government. The state governor, Major General Matur Chut, is here in Yirol to see to it that  the civilian population is protected and this what we have been doing,” he said.

Mr. Makoi said four civilians who had been taken hostage by forces loyal to Dr. Riek Machar are now safe.

He said organized forces had also retrieved a large number of cattle that had been looted.

The government of Lakes state says it has temporarily moved its headquarters to Yirol West County to monitor reported movements of forces loyal to Dr. Riek Machar along the boundary with Unity state.
