President Salva Kiir has encouraged South Sudanese to come together in a shared commitment to a peaceful South Sudan as they approach the new year 2025 and assured them of safety in his Christmas address.
Christmas is one of South Sudan’s most important religious traditions and a time for families to be together, share meals, exchange gifts and thank God for his love for mankind.
However, families across the country have marked the event in hard times of dire economic and humanitarian challenges as well as a rapidly spreading cholera outbreak.
Public sector civil servants and organized forces have not received an accumulated salary arrears of more than 10 months as UN agencies warned of an alarming humanitarian crisis where more than half the country’s population will go hungry in 2025.
In his national address on Christmas Eve on Tuesday, President Salva Kiir reminded citizens of their shared commitment to a peaceful, prosperous, and united South Sudan.
“Let this holiday be a time when we come together in a shared commitment to a peaceful, prosperous and united South Sudan. As we celebrate this Christmas, may we carry the message of peace and hope in our hearts into the new year.”
The Head of State further assured the public of his government’s commitment to provide security for their safety.
“I want to reassure you that this Christmas, your government has prioritized your safety and security especially for those who may be travelling to the countryside.”
“The government is committed to ensure a peaceful and secure environment not only during the festive season but throughout the year.”
