Kiir raises arms embargo, regional crisis at AU Summit

President Salva Kiir highlighted the implementation status of the 2018 peace deal and the security challenges of the arms embargo imposed on his country by the United Nations Security Council.

This was in his address of the assembly of African Union Heads of State and Government in Ethiopia on Sunday.

According to a statement by his office, the president highlighted the progress made by the unity government in implementing the September 2018 peace deal and preparations for the elections.

“President Kiir noted the security challenges posed by the arms embargo,” the statement reads, in part.

President Kiir further reiterated the need to address conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan, calling for collective efforts to promote peace in the Great Lakes region and the Horn of Africa.
