President Salva Kiir Mayardit has pledged that the government will provide the resources and logistical support needed for South Sudan’s general elections scheduled for December 2026.
The commitment came during a meeting on Thursday between President Kiir and the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission, Professor Abednego Akok Kacoul, who briefed the head of state on preparations for the polls.
Professor Akok said the Commission is planning to announce the official election date in June as preparations intensify ahead of the vote, which is now about eight months away.
He added that nationwide civic education and voter registration will be rolled out simultaneously as part of efforts to prepare citizens to participate in the electoral process.
According to the Commission, the elections will be conducted across 102 geographical constituencies covering the country’s 10 states and three administrative areas.
The meeting also discussed operational issues including constituency demarcation and other practical steps required to ensure the electoral process runs smoothly.
President Kiir urged the Commission to maintain momentum in its preparations, reiterating the government’s commitment to support the process to ensure successful elections in December.
Professor Akok welcomed the President’s engagement and guidance, saying it provides encouragement for the Commission as it works toward delivering credible and orderly elections for the people of South Sudan.
