Kiir, NEC boss discuss electoral acts amendment

President Salva Kiir has discussed with the Chairperson of the National Election Commission, the preparations for the general elections at the end of the extended transitional period.

They met at the president’s office on Monday.

The Minister of Presidential Affairs Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin said the President and Chairperson of the National Elections Commission discussed plans to prepare the country for general elections.

According the roadmap in the peace agreement, South Sudan should conduct general elections at the end of the transitional period in December 2024.

The Chairperson of the National Election Commission, Professor Abednego Akok reportedly said the meeting centered on the amendment of the electoral acts to complete the process.

“National Election Commission must be reconstituted to prepare the country for the next general elections,” Prof. Akok said.
