President Salva Kiir has donated one million United States dollars to the University of Juba in the ongoing fundraising for infrastructure development of the public institution.

The contribution by the head of state announced by his office minister is part of Professor John Akec’s campaign to raise three million dollars for the expansion of the learning institution.

Professor Akech started the campaign in September this year when he urged students at the University to dig deeper into their pockets to develop the university for their own benefit.

He said he needed the money to set up a new lecture hall complex to contain a library with 1,000 seats, computer labs, seminar rooms, a supermarket, and food courts, among others.

However, many students criticized the move with some expressing concerns over the challenging economic situation to afford the payment.

This month, Mr. Akech invited the public including President Salva Kiir to a fundraising event today to support the project.

President Kiir did not show up at the occasion attended by government officials as well as well-wishers.

However, the President delegated the Minister in his office, Dr. Barnaba Marial with a one million dollar as his offer to the university.

Several government officials at the state and national levels have pledged an amount in pounds and US dollars.
